SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES PROGRAM
Reimagining Nigerian Cities Through Innovation and Collaboration
The Sustainable Cities & Communities Program by Engineers Without Borders Nigeria challenges university students across Nigeria to redesign specific parts of a city based on real-world urban challenges. This initiative fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative problem-solving, and a deep understanding of sustainable urban development.
how it works
City Selection & Problem Definition – A city or urban area with pressing challenges (e.g., transportation, housing, energy, waste management) is selected, and students are given a design brief outlining key requirements.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration – Students from engineering, architecture, urban planning, environmental science, social sciences, and business faculties work together to develop holistic, scalable, and sustainable solutions.
Design & Innovation Process – Teams use data-driven insights, human-centered design, and sustainability principles to propose innovative city redesign solutions, integrating smart technology, green spaces, and resilient infrastructure.
Evaluation & Awards – A panel of industry experts, city officials, and academics will assess the designs based on feasibility, sustainability, scalability, and impact. The best design wins a prestigious prize, with opportunities for mentorship, internships, and potential real-world implementation.
